What should I do with my furnace in the winter time?

January 16, 2024

It’s that time of year–time when we like our furnaces to kick on!

What should you do in the winter time to keep your furnace operating smoothly?

Here are a few things that you can do:

Change or clean the air filter

A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow and reduce the efficiency of your furnace. Check your filter monthly and replace it as needed, typically 1 to 3 months.

Schedule Small Solutions maintenance

Consider having us come out and inspect and service your furnace annually (ideally before the heating season begins). That way, we can identify and address any potential issues, clean components, and insure the system is operating efficiently.

Clean air vents and registers

Make sure that all vents and registers in your home are unobstructed by furniture, rugs, or other objects. This ensures proper airflow throughout your home.

Insulate and seal your home

Proper insulation and sealing of gaps and cracks in your home can help retain heat, reduce the workload on your furnace and save energy.

Programmable thermostat

If you don’t already have one, consider installing a programmable thermostat. This allows you to set the regular schedule that lowers the temperature when your way or sleeping and it raises it when you’re home and awake, saving energy, and reducing the strain on the furnace.

Check the thermostat

Ensure that your thermostat is functioning correctly and accurately, reflecting the temperature in your home. Replace batteries if necessary.

Monitor the furnace's performance

Play attention to any unusual sounds, odors, or changes in hearing performance. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact us and we’ll see what’s happening.

Keep the area around the furnace clear

Avoid storing items near the furnace, and ensure there is adequate space for proper ventilation and maintenance access.

Check the pilot light or ignition system

If your furnace has a pilot light, make sure it’s burning a steady blue flame. If you have an electric ignition system, ensure that it’s functioning properly.

Be prepared for power outages

Consider installing a back up generator or having alternative healing sources (e.g. space heaters) available in case of power outages.

Monitor carbon monoxide detectors

Make sure you have carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home, especially in your bedrooms and your furnace. Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed.

By following these steps, you can help ensure that your furnace operates smoothly during the winter, keeping your home warm and comfortable while minimizing energy consumption and potential issues. If you’re not comfortable performing any of these tasks yourself, it’s always a good idea to consult us for assistance.
